General appraisal

The university’s artistic heritage forms a broad collection of more than four thousand works. The collection’s nature is particularly varied, mainly due to the different origins and ways in which each of the pieces has been acquired.

If we analyse the university collection from a chronological point of view, the most notable characteristics are:

  • • An Archaeological and Numismatics collection, which are the only representation of ancient art along with the Egyptian collection.
  • • We keep a minimal representation of heritage from the 16th century. The few pieces from this period are from the Iglesia de la Anunciación Church. The works from sculptor Juan Bautista Vázquez el Viejo are the most noteworthy.
  • • A collection of paintings and sculptures from the 17th century baroque art, which come from the expropriation of Jesuit heritage and are from authors such as Martínez Montañés, Juan de Mesa, Pacheco, Juan de Roelas, Pablo de Céspedes and Herrera el Viejo.
  • • A collection of academic drawings from the 18th and 19th century, which come from the Real Escuela de las Tres Nobles Artes art school, the origin of the Fine Arts Academy of Seville and the current Faculty of Fine Arts.
  • • A collection of reproductions of sculptures made of plaster from the 18th, 19th and 20th century. They are made by plaster casting and most of them have a classical nature, although the collection also contains Sevillian art works.
  • • A numerous collection of portraits from the 19th and 20th centuries, which represent rectors, bishops, doctors and university personalities. Moreover, there is also a collection of portraits of famous people from Seville, managed by the ancient Biblioteca Provincial y Universitaria library.
  • • An emblematic photography collection which belongs to the Art Laboratory’s Fototeca Photo Library, from the beginning of the 20th century.
  • • A sample of paintings and contemporary sculptures donated by teachers from the Faculty of Fine Arts.
  • • A collection of works from young contemporary creators, given by the prizes of the National Contest of Plastic Arts, organised by the University of Seville from 1994.
